Nine Maternity Clothing Consignment opened in March 2008. Being a fan of “regular” consignment stores for years, the idea for a maternity consignment store was born as I watched my friends have children and pack away their maternity clothes into big Rubbermaid bins, never to be seen again except when they hauled them out the pass them along to another friend.
Then, when I needed maternity clothes in 2004 I realized exactly how much those puppies cost new and I couldn’t get the idea of a maternity clothing consignment store out of my head. Being that I had just graduated from law school, I could not toss all those years of Civil Procedure, Contracts and Torts out the window to open a retail clothing store, so we have partnered with Debra Deacon (a sister of the owners of My Sister's Closet in St. Paul and now a new My Sister's Closet in Uptown) to help us run the store.
We found a space in south Minneapolis, found a great graphic designer, Ryan Haugen from Gray Matter Creative (firstname.lastname@example.org) to come up with our logo. We contacted everyone we knew to get our hands on clothes, bought a computer system and ta-da, opened the doors. In December of 2009, my husband and Co-owner, Mike was driving through Downtown Hopkins and saw that there was a space next to Baby Grand available for lease. Three months later we moved the store (all in one night) to our new bigger, better space in Downtown Hopkins.
So far we have met a lot of great people, had some fun, learned a lot, helped new moms make a buck or two and helped moms-to-be save a buck or two. With your help we hope to keep growing and keep our doors open for years to come. Stop by and see us. We would love to meet you.
